A Life at the Keyboard

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Ron began piano lessons at the age of five. A natural and enthusiastic learner, he gave his first television appearance at fourteen and by sixteen had toured the province, bringing solo piano recitals to communities that had never heard one before.

After graduating high school in 1967, he pursued a Bachelor of Music in Performance at the University of Toronto. For thirteen years he studied in New York City and spent summers in Aspen, Colorado under the tutelage of Jeaneane Dowis — assistant to Rosina Lhévinne, co-founder of the Juilliard School.

In 1980, following a private audition with John H. Steinway, Chairman of Steinway & Sons piano makers, Ron was inducted into the prestigious roster of international Steinway Artists — a distinction he holds to this day.

In 1990, drawn to the intersection of physicality and musicianship, Ron embarked on a three-year study of the Alexander Technique, qualifying as a certified teacher in 1996 — the same year he was accepted into the Master of Music in Performance Degree at the University of Toronto.

He taught at Acadia University, one of Canada's oldest institutions, from 2001 until his retirement in 2016, having shaped the careers of over twenty students who went on to win competitions and build professional careers. Over the years, Ronald has performed with several orchestras, featuring works by Mozart, Grieg, Schumann, Saint-Saëns, Prokofieff, and Rachmaninoff, to name a few. He served and remains active as an examiner and adjudicator for the Royal Conservatory of Music, spending more than three decades in this role, and was publicly honoured for his service in November 2024.

In His Own Words

"After years of performing and teaching, I developed a recital format that includes brief, engaging introductions to each piece — offering context on the composer, era, and significance, often with light humour and interesting anecdotes. These insights are carefully researched and presented informally, enhancing the audience's connection to the music without turning the recital into a lecture.

Programs are typically built around a unifying theme, and audience feedback consistently highlights these introductions as a memorable and enriching part of the experience."

In Their Own Words

Mr. Tomarelli delivered a commanding performance across a wide and demanding repertoire, moving seamlessly between styles with confidence, sensitivity, and precision. His interpretations were both technically assured and musically compelling, earning standing ovations from an engaged and enthusiastic audience. Equally impressive were his brief spoken introductions, which added insight, charm, and accessibility — enhancing the experience for listeners of all backgrounds. In my view, Mr. Tomarelli is an exceptional and inspiring artist who deserves far broader exposure throughout Mexico and beyond.

We’ve had the pleasure of attending Ron Tomarelli’s concerts in both Canada and Mexico. I expected a great pianist—I didn’t expect to come away with such a clear, engaging understanding of the music itself. Ron’s informal, articulate introductions bring each composer to life—revealing the how, why, and where behind every piece. You don’t just hear the music—you truly get it. The result is a richer, more meaningful concert experience. If you have the chance to attend one of his recitals, don’t miss it. The music is excellent. The experience is even better.

It was a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon and also learn something about classical music. Ron was amazing — his fingers flew across the keys, hard to believe it can be done. I saw it with my own eyes!

Ron's presentation and performance were "as good as it gets." He both educated and engaged us all. What a pleasure to have been invited and to have attended.
